On the 5th July we enjoyed a visit to Davenport GC located just north of Macclesfield. A week before our visit the weather forecast was not reassuring promising yet more rain. However, as the date got nearer the forecast got better but no-one expected the glorious warm sunshine we experienced on the day.
Everyone at Davenport looked after us magnificently and were a credit to their club.
The format was AMAM with the best three scores to count on all par 4s and 5s but all scores to count on the par 3s. An excellent score of 110 points won the day for Mark Langton, Clive Richards, Paul (Postie) Williams and Frank Chapman. The common opinion is that Mark’s team was inspired to victory by his shirt which, it is rumoured, could be seen from the International Space Station.
Individual performance of the day came from Phil Maitland who not only was a member of the third placed team but also took the individual prizes of second shot nearest the pin on the second hole and nearest the pin on the sixteenth.
Seniors’ Captain Dave Archibald heaved a sigh of relief when he learned that his team had not finished last. More importantly, he had finished above his car sharer, Brian Freeman and, knowing Dave, I’ll bet he never mentioned it once on the way home.
Everyone enjoyed the day so much that a quick vote was taken after the golf and we will be going back to Davenport for next year’s away day. Hopefully, Stuart Belfield will remember the way.
Another great day, great weather, great company and, in some cases, great golf.
