Rules & Policies
The standards, rules and guidance that help everyone enjoy Trentham Park, on the course and in the clubhouse. Whether you are a member or a visitor, this is the place to check before you play.
At a glance
Everything in one place
This page brings together the club's main policies: safeguarding, dress code, etiquette, buggies, local rules and competition rules, together with links to the Rules of Golf and our website policies.
Where a policy has a full document, you can open it as a PDF straight from this page. Copies are also available from the club office.

01 · Safeguarding & welfare
Keeping everyone safe
Trentham Park follows England Golf's safeguarding framework and has a Club Welfare Officer for children, young people and adults. Our safeguarding page explains who to contact, how to raise a concern and where to find the policies.
02 · Dress code
What to wear
Smart golf clothing
Recognised golf clothing must be worn at all times. As a guide, if it is sold in a golf pro shop it is fine on the course. If in doubt, ask our club professional.
Please avoid
Denim, football or rugby kit, tracksuits, and cargo or multi-pocket shorts and trousers. Shirts designed to be worn untucked are acceptable.
Golf shoes
Recognised golf shoes with metal spikes, soft spikes or dimpled soles must be worn on the course.
Smart casual
Golf attire and smart casual wear, including jeans that are not torn or ripped, are welcome in the bars and lounge.
Clubhouse guidance
- Golf shoes worn on the course may not be worn in the main lounge or dining room. Clean golf shoes are permitted in the Sutherland Bar.
- Football and rugby kit is not permitted in any bar or lounge, and caps and headwear should be removed.
- Please change out of wet or dirty clothing before entering the bars or lounges.
- Holdalls and shoe bags should not be brought into the bars or lounges.
Presentations and evening events
Club presentations (invitation days, Opens, and Captain's and President's Days) are formal dress unless a club official says otherwise. The dress code for evening events is confirmed in advance.
03 · Etiquette
How we play
The Rules of Golf tell us how we play; etiquette is about the manner in which we play. A few simple courtesies keep the course safe, moving and in great condition for everyone.
Safety first
Make sure nobody is within range before you play, and shout "Fore" straight away if a ball may hit someone.
Keep up the pace
Be ready to play, keep up with the group in front and call faster groups through when there is a gap.
Care for the course
Repair pitch marks, replace or fill divots, rake bunkers and keep trolleys and buggies away from greens and tees.
Respect others
Keep noise down, stand still while others play and follow any instructions from club staff and officials.
04 · Buggy policy
Buggies on the course
The club has separate policies for hiring a club buggy and for using your own ride-on buggy. Buggy use depends on course conditions, so please check the Course Status bar at the top of the website, or call the club, before you play.
05 · Local & winter rules
Local rules
Local rules, including out of bounds, apply to every round at Trentham Park, and winter rules apply during the winter months. They are also displayed in the clubhouse. When winter rules are in force, please check with the Pro Shop before you play.
06 · Competition rules
Playing in competitions
All club competitions are played in accordance with the World Handicap System and the Rules of Golf. Each trophy and knockout has its own conditions for the men's, ladies' and mixed competitions.
- Conditions for individual trophies, medals and knockouts are on the clubhouse noticeboard and available from the club office.
- The Competitions page lists the fixtures and how to enter.
- The Senior Winter League page explains the league format, scoring and how to enter your score.
07 · Rules of golf & handicaps
The official rules
The Rules of Golf are set by The R&A, and handicaps in England are managed under the World Handicap System by England Golf.
08 · Club governance
How the club is run
The club is run by its committee, with decisions reported to members at the Annual General Meeting. Members can request copies of the club rules, AGM papers and minutes from the club office.
